Claude Zervas, More Starlings

Greg Kucera Gallery is pleased to present our third one-person exhibition of work by Seattle artist Claude Zervas. The exhibition, titled More Starlings, consists of a series of small to medium scale oil on wood panel paintings and oil stick on pigment prints. Incorporating a combination of traditional and non-traditional painting techniques in his paintings, the artist explores his idiosyncratic and highly personal visual vernacular to create thickly textured and oddly composed works that defy any concrete explanation.
“When still, the mind expands, and is void of ideas. On the path to stillness, the mind wanders like the flight of starlings. Ideas, which are distilled from embodied experience, arise unbidden from cognition that is inaccessible to consciousness. Allowed to pass by without reflection, they nevertheless leave traces which can still inspire action, maybe at a later time. These ideas have been mostly lost to memory; so any resulting artifacts are then explained by inventing narratives incorporating other, possibly new, ideas. Like a diaphanous Ouroboros, the stories become history, and history becomes a story.”
