For “Intention and Happenstance” Dodi Fredericks quotes Robert Motherwell, “In the brush doing what it’s doing it will stumble on what one couldn’t do by oneself.” In my work the starting point is a purposeful gesture of line or brushstroke which is followed by a tangible response to that initial element, or happenstance of the interaction of gesture to the material quality of the paint or line with water and paper, or a continuation of an initial intention.
Sue Springer’s installation “The World is On Fire” transforms global instability and climate change into an immersive constellation of suspended ceramic spheres. Varying in size, surface, and texture, the rotating forms invite close examination, revealing raised flames, map-like imagery, and unexpected details that suggest a world in motion and under pressure.
