Gallery Garuda exhibits at Nino Studio

Gallery Garuda brings striking, museum-worthy contemporary art from India and other parts of South Asia to collectors and aficionados in the Pacific Northwest.

Join us for an exhibit spotlighting the work of Swapnil Jagtap. Jagtap’s rich, dramatic canvases of acrylics and jute rope take you to his native place in rural India.

After completing his BFA and MFA from Mumbai’s iconic JJ School of Arts, the award-winning artist moved back to his family of farmers in a notoriously drought-prone part of Western India. This conscious homecoming is invoked in an astonishing palette of rustic geometries and village life whilst conjuring a language that is both hyper-local and global all at once.

From ritual offerings to a local goddess in the forms of shells, coils, leaves and woven baskets to ecological mappings of mountains, trees, fields and stone, Jagtap picks up motifs from his immediate surroundings and crafts a post-modern still life that merges village life and animist abstraction. The lush semi-abstract, semi-figurative canvases from his ‘Pardi’ series tease you to come closer but also urge you to take a meditative step back and allow yourself to be bewitched by the patterns he conjures.
