Hib Sabin’s Final Exhibition

This September, Stonington Gallery is honored to present Hib Sabin’s final exhibition of carved works, bringing together a new body that reflects on the ideas that have occupied Sabin throughout his long career: transformation, memory, mortality, the passage of time, and our relationship to the unknown. For decades, Sabin has utilized a familiar cast of characters to consider some of our most difficult and enduring questions. What do we carry with us as we move through life? What gets left behind? How do the stories we tell about ourselves change as we age, and what does it mean to arrive at the end of one chapter while still looking toward whatever might come next?

In this exhibition, the familiar guardians, shapeshifters, dreamers, and companions appear as they always do; occupying the strange territory between the physical and spiritual worlds that Sabin has explored throughout his work. As has become customary, every major sculpture Sabin carves begins as a pencil sketch, whether a rough outline or a shaded and fully-realized drawing, and are available for purchase. A final exhibition inevitably asks us to look backward, but Sabin’s work has never been particularly interested in staying there. His characters remain travelers, and we remain curious. Where might Raven and Owl go from here?
