Gallery No. 85 is excited to share: Hidden Gems featuring the work of Robert Connell (American, b. 1947), June 4th through June 27th, 2026. Hidden Gems welcomes summer with a celebration of Connell’s simple imperative. Connell is known for his paintings that utilize sumi ink and gouache on paper, with ink applied on-site, then gouache rolled on with a printmaker’s brayer back in the studio. His works begin on location, in the open air, where the light is real and the scene is unrehearsed. These are not grand destinations; they are the kinds of places you pass on a bike ride, a long walk, a detour taken without a plan. Grounded in observation, but luminous with interpretation, each piece carries the feeling of a moment truly inhabited. Join us as we follow Connell’s guidance to go outside and look more closely.
