James Leong: A Retrospective, Part II

Chatwin Arts continues to celebrate the work of James Leong with Part II of a retrospective from the estate of this Chinese-American artist. Part II includes Chinese-influenced landscapes influenced by a family visit to China, along with more refined work with beautifully rendered textures based on earlier subjects.

Internationally known, Leong worked in Rome from 1958 to 1989, and then moved with his wife, Dean, to Seattle in 1990. He was Seattle Arts Commissioner from 1994 to 1998, and on the advisory boards of the Museum of History and Industry, the Wing Luke Museum, and the International Examiner–all Seattle-based–from 1990 to 1997.

One of the most important 20th-century Chinese-American artists, Leong found it necessary to live in exile in Italy for over 30 years. He was nominated for the National Medal of Arts in 1997, received a Fulbright for Norway (1956-58), and Guggenheim Foundation Award for Italy (1958-59).

Chatwin Arts thanks Dean Leong for allowing the gallery to help share the work of this important artist.
