Michael Burns: Urban Works (1978-1980)

We are proud to present the first complete show of photographer Michael Burns’ (American, 1942) series of urban architectural photographs of downtown Seattle, taken between 1978-1980.

The collection features some of the great architectural compositions of the period: each image is a monument to the best of the city, each is animated by what Michael described as “…that subtle and persuasive resonance with the instant, the light, framing, meaning and configuration.”

There are over seventy 16×20 silver gelatin prints, all of them original, dated, titled, spotted, and hand signed by Michael. All were photographed using an 8×10 Calumet C1 camera, using a technically difficult process with astonishingly luminous, detailed results. Also available is an early-career portfolio suite of ten 8×10 silver gelatin contact prints mounted on acid-free museum board, titled “Studio Views.”

The work of photographer Marsha Burns, Michael’s wife, will simultaneously be on display at Long Brothers Fine & Rare books. Both shows open Thursday, October 1.

A reception for our Urban Works show will take place at Peter Miller Books for Pioneer Square Art Walk from 5pm-8pm.
