In 2008, the International Sustainability Institute began an initiative for a “new urban network” in Seattle alleys, with a vision to revitalize and transform these underutilized urban areas into vibrant public spaces. The project began in Pioneer Square’s Nord Alley, located between Occidental
Ave S and 1st Ave S. The alley has been converted into a venue for planned public events, such as openings for temporary site-specific art installations and gatherings to watch the 2010 World Cup games and the Tour de France. These two sporting events attracted nearly 3,000 people to the alley.
