Shelly’s Leg

At this spot in 1973, Shelly Bauman opened the first disco and openly-gay bar in Seattle. When Shelly was participating in the 1970 Bastille Day parade, an antique cannon mistakenly fired off a hardened ball of confetti, taking her leg with it. The $300,000 insurance settlement from the accident paid for the cost of opening the club. Therefore, to immortalize the source of this funding, she and her co-owners named the disco: Shelly’s Leg.
