Welcome to the Original Seattle Neighborhood – rich in history, arts, culture, and food!
Imagine water all around you. Here, adjacent to the stadiums, you have now walked into the original tideflats created from Duwamish River silt. Nearby, a saltwater lagoon spanned the area from Yesler Way to S Jackson St, and Occidental Ave S
to 2nd Ave Ext S. The lagoon was filled in gradually from the mid 1850s to 1889 with various debris – including sawdust from the Yesler Mill and building remains from the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. In 1892, Reginald H. Thomson became Seattle’s City Engineer. For the next 20 years, he was responsible for lowering most of the central business district between Denny Way and Spokane Street and for raising the tideflats above sea level.
